The Impact of Electronic Health Records on Patient-Centered Care

February 2025

In the 21st century, nursing practice has drastically transformed due to technological advancements, a focus on evidence-based practice, and an increasingly complex healthcare environment. New technologies, such as electronic health records (EHR), telemedicine, and advanced medical devices, have become commonplace.

During my practice, I have noticed how the integration of EHR has made patient documentation more efficient, but it also created a barrier between myself and the patient, as I had to focus on entering information into the system while interacting with the patient.

I felt both excited and overwhelmed. On one hand, it was empowering to see how technology could streamline processes and improve the efficiency of care. On the other hand, I felt disconnected from the patients at times, as I was so focused on the technology.

Moving forward, I will work on being more efficient with technology, so that I can spend more time with patients. I will focus on ensuring that technology does not interfere with patient interaction, even if that means scheduling time for documentation outside direct patient care hours.

Key Takeaways

Balance technology use with patient interaction
Prioritize face-to-face communication
Schedule dedicated documentation time
Continuous improvement in EHR efficiency
